DRY TO ATOPIC SKIN
Dry skin lacks lipids (fats). The skin is uncomfortable, tight and itches. The degree of dryness can vary significantly based on environment and lifestyle. Feelings of discomfort can be accompanied by atopic eczema flare-ups, or they can be permanent, especially in the elderly. Infant atopic dermatitis or senile xerosis: in all cases of dry skin, the skin barrier is weakened and must be strengthened durably.
How can you tell the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin is first defined by feelings. People feel that their skin is dry because they consider it is uncomfortable, tight and possibly rough and think the application of an appropriate product will provide relief. These symptoms can sometimes be accompanied by itching and burning sensations. A doctor, however, will decide that skin is dry (the term xerosis is also used) based on objective criteria: a dull appearance, specific clinical epidermal signs of desquamation, cracking, sometimes inflammation and loss of elasticity. Irregularities on the skin’s surface are even more significant with dry skin. Dry skin provides a favourable environment for eczema to develop, especially particularly in the form of pityriasis alba (dry patches).
What is Atopic Skin?
A more severe form of very dry skin, irritated skin with itching is considered atopic skin. This skin disease starts at a very young age and has all the characteristics of a genuine epidemic. It is even one of the main causes of visits to the dermatologist! In the past 30 years, the number of cases of atopic dermatitis has doubled or even tripled in western countries*. Atopic skin is not well known or understood, yet it disrupts the lives of children and their parents. However, recent scientific discoveries have improved understanding of the illness and changed the way it is treated starting at birth.
